Pantone Announces Color of the Year
By Noelle Graf
It’s 2017 and we’re all going green: The Pantone Institute has announced Greenery 15-0343 as the Color of the Year! The Pantone Color of the Year is chosen as a color snapshot representing our current global climate and culture. This bright, refreshing shade of yellow-green is symbolic of new beginnings—and a perfect color for heading into the New Year.
Since 2000, the Pantone Color Institute has designated a signature Color of the Year, a shade that boldly influences the design world. Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, says Greenery was chosen as the color of the year for 2017, “to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment.” The uplifting shade of green also symbolizes a reconnection with nature, and humanity’s desire to rejuvenate and revitalize.
The Pantone Color Institute meets twice a year, usually in a European capitol, to present options for the upcoming color of the year. Past Pantone colors of the year include Serenity 15-3919, Marsala 18-1438, and Radiant Orchid 18-3224.

The Pantone Color Matching System is a standardized global color reproduction system that allows different printers and manufacturers around the world to color match exact shades through the CMYK printing process, as well as spot colors that can’t be created with CMYK colors cyan, magenta, yellow, black. The Pantone system also allows for specialized colors such as metallic and fluorescents. Pantone’s screen-based colors use the RGB (red, green, blue) color model. Pantone colors are referenced by numbers.
